Touch and Tactility – what people are craving!

Everyone’s days are increasingly being shaped by devices and computer screens rather than real world, tactile interactions.  To make up for this loss, people are looking for experiences with actual touch and being in the same room and enjoying other people’s company.  Pottery Painting is an invitation for a sensory experience, touch, feel, socialize in person.  Adding coffee and baked goods or savory snack also adds to that sensory experience of smell and taste.  A true “Gathering Place” to create, socialize and unplug!

Celebrations around the world – Day of the Dead is a popular one!

Day of the Dead (known as Día de Muertos in Spanish) is celebrated in Mexico between October 31st and November 2nd. On this holiday, Mexicans remember and honor their deceased loved ones. It’s not a gloomy or morbid occasion, rather it is a festive and colorful holiday celebrating the lives of those who have passed on. Mexicans visit cemeteries, decorate the graves and spend time there, in the presence of their deceased friends and family members.

With so many bright colours to choose from, Pottery Painting is a great way to celebrate the Day of the Dead with family and friends.

Pop art is an art movements that emerged in Britain and the United States during the mid to late 1950’s.  Pop art often takes imagery that is currently in use in advertising.  Product labeling and logos figure prominently in the imagery chosen by pop artists, seen in the labels of Campbell’s Soup Cans, by Andy Warhol.
Pop Art also uses elements of popular culture, such as magazine, comics, movies, popular music and iconic personalities.
Plates, bowls, cups, tiles, teapots, donuts, cupcake shaped bisque are all perfect for Pop Art.  Let’s get the party started!

Farm to Table – What is Trending in Tabletop for 2018 – Great Stoneware Event idea!

Farm to table. Rustic, natural, organic, comfort. The buzzwords flying around food, chefs and restaurants have hit the tabletop, from earthenware plates to mason jars, simple silverware and roughed-up wooden furniture. From the East Coast to the West, the consensus on trends is clear: it’s all about farmhouse simplicity.

Rustic Dinnerware

When it comes to dinnerware it’s all about the farm to the tabletop, literally. For the first time in years, stark white seems to be on the outs, at least on the independent restaurant scene. Earth-colored, pottery-style plates with slightly rough textures and imperfect shapes — the kind you might see in a country home — are in.  Bare tables are in, tablecloths are out.  Smaller plates are in for food sharing menus.

Earthen colours help act as a backdrop for beautiful, natural, organic food.  The explosion of potters and ceramic specialists increasing their lines for commercial foodservice is evidence of this growing trend.

There are more mismatched table settings and everything being individualized.

Stoneware fits beautifully into this “Farm To Table” trend, with quality feeling pieces and stoneware glazes that are rustic and earthy looking and can be combined into so many unique combinations.  Add dark or light flux for even more gorgeous options!  See Mayco’s stoneware glazes and flux and Duncan’s Renaissance glazes

Earthenware tableware is also a good choice using Pottery looking glazes to get that rustic, natural and organic feel.  Duncan’s Artisan Glazes, Mayco’s Elements and Gare Pottery Glazes are low fire but give that pottery look.

Why not have a Farm to Table Event, create beautiful tableware and serve some local organic snacks.  Maybe network with a local restaurant that promotes Farm to Table – do a cooking and creating tableware series of events.  Children’s programs where they learn about the farm to table movement and then create a plate or mug, read a story and have a locally produced snack.
